Why D-Group?
THE PROBLEM:
Lots of people struggle in their relationship with God and His Word. They want to grow deeper but don’t know how, or don’t have a supportive community alongside them to encourage them in it. Their daily devotional content is all too often self-focused, and the format lacks accountability. Many people feel traditional home groups leave something to be desired as well, failing to challenge them to new levels and greater understanding.
OUR RESPONSE:
D-Group aims to train and equip leaders and members to know and love God and His Word in the way they long to! We provide leader training and support for those who want to build a community at their church, in their neighborhood, or online. We build out weekly curriculum, including: Bible study for discussion, weekly videos, daily Bible reading, Scripture memory, prayer prompts, accountability, and practical application of the Scriptures. Our members are part of an international network using the same curriculum simultaneously, all around the globe.
THE RESULTS:
After committing to D-Group, those who have been intimidated by Scripture or lack a desire to read it at all have found a new affection for reading and living out the Bible. Others who have never felt confident in prayer have grown comfortable praying aloud. New Christians who have never tried to memorize Scripture have successfully memorized large passages, including the entire book of James. And those who lack rich relationships with other Christians have found a place of encouragement and challenge.
What should I expect?
Weekly Meetings:
-
BE THERE: Each member is asked to prioritize meetings for a whole session (6 weeks). The end/start of each session is an on-ramp for new members and an off-ramp for those who may need to take a break.
-
TIME: Each meeting is 2 hours long. During that time, we aim to have a distraction-free environment and stay on topic.
-
MEETING: Each week includes:
- Scripture Memory
- Prayer
- Weekly Video
- Group Discussion
- Closing Prayer
-
MEMORIZE: Memorizing Scripture is hard for some, but we give you the tools and the accountability to hide God’s Word in your heart!
-
PRAYER: Every session you’ll be paired with a prayer partner. You’ll spend 30 minutes of each session together—confessing sin, sharing requests, and praying for each other. For MOST members, this becomes the most cherished part of D-Group.
-
PARTICIPATE: Some of us have the tendency to speak less, while others have more to say. It’s important that everyone participates in the group discussion. People who don’t often contribute or think they “know less” are more valued than they realize! And those who have more to say need to encourage and serve their D-Group by making sure there’s space for it.
Expectations:
-
CHRISTIAN: Our goal is to help those who know Jesus deepen their faith in Him. Please review our Beliefs page if you have questions.
[Two excellent resources for the person who isn’t a follower of Jesus are: The Walk (book by Stephen Smallman) and The Path (sermon series by The Village Church).]
-
CHURCH: D-Group does not replace your local church. While you can join a D-Group if you’re between churches, our expectation is that you actively seek participation in a local expression of the Church. D-Groups at Florence Methodist are open to people of all churches. Membership at FMC is not required to participate in a D-Group. If you do not have a local church home, you are invited to Connect, Love, Grow and Serve with us!
-
SHARES: Each session members are asked to pay a $25 registration fee. (Borrowing investment terminology, we refer to these as “Shares”—because we want you to be invested and see returns on that investment!) We waive Shares for those who are first-time members in D-Group (for their first session), and those who serve as Fellows also have Shares waived.
-
18+: (or no longer in High School) We believe that the student ministries of the local church are best equipped to disciple children and students.
-
COMMITTED: D-Group is structured and has work to do between meetings. Each member must commit to doing the work and showing up ready!
-
TEACHABLE: We expect that God will teach us something new about Himself and His Word. As a result, His Spirit will prompt repentance, change, and growth in our own lives.
